ALGBTICTN Interest Group Report

ALGBTICTN is the Association for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Issues in Counseling of Tennessee, a state branch of the ALGBTIC Division of ACA.  It was approved for formation as a future Division at the LDC in July 2009. 

WHAT IS OUR VISION?  

n  ALGBTICTN seeks to address the unique challenges of client sexual and gender identity development and foster a supportive therapeutic environment through the reduction of stereotypical thinking.

ALGBTICTN MISSION:

n  To promote greater awareness and understanding of LGBT issues among members of the counseling profession and related helping occupations

n  To improve standards and delivery of counseling services provided to LGBT clients and communities

n  To identify conditions which create barriers to the human growth and development of LGBT clients and communities; and use counseling skills, programs, and efforts to preserve, protect, and promote such development

n  To develop, implement, and foster interest in counseling-related charitable, scientific, and educational programs designed to further the human growth and development of LGBT clients and communities

n  To protect from harm LGBT individuals by language, stereotypes, myths, misinformation, threats of expulsion from social and institutional structures and other entities, and from beliefs contrary to their identity

n  To provide educational programs and resources to raise the standard of practice for all counselors who serve LGBT clients and communities

ALGBTICTN NEEDS: …

n  MEMBERS:   To be a full Division of TCA the ALGBTICTN Interest Group must have at least 40 paid members on the rolls.  We currently [11/18/09] have 10 paid members.  Your $20.00 commitment to ALGBTICTN ensures its viability as a full Division.

n  OFFICERS:  Per our bylaws, the first slate of officers may be appointed by the Executive Committee as approved by TCA Governing Council.  We currently have a President and President-Elect.  There is still a need for a Treasurer and a Secretary.  If you know someone who would be diligent in such duties please let us know.

n  COMMITTEE MEMBERS:  There are 6 committees through which ALGBTICTN will do its work.  These committees need members’ participation and are outlined as follows ….

ALGBTICTN COMMITTEES

n  REGIONAL NETWORK:  Serves a means for membership to gather information and resources regarding LGBT interests and activities in TN.  Goal is to have at least one member from each TCA Chapter.

n  NOMINATIONS & ELECTIONS: Conducts nomination process for officers, conducts elections, recommends procedures for carrying out elections.

n  PUBLICITY:  work to make the membership, TCA and general public aware of the Division’s activities.  Establishes and maintains Division website.

n  MEMBERSHIP:  Promotes interest in the division among all eligible persons in the state.

n  BYLAWS/POLICY & PROCEDURES:  Supplies membership with accurate copies of bylaws and proposes amendments to them when appropriate;  Chair is Parliamentarian of the Division.

n  STRATEGIC PLANNING:  Develops, maintains and monitors three-year Plans for  Division.
